Fawzi, Ramdan and Asma have been friends since childhood. The two men and the woman lead a happy life in the ancient city of Cherchell, west of Algiers, and their relationships are a combination of friendship and romantic love. Their world is shaken and slowly torn apart as they become overwhelmed by events around them: the popular riots of 1988, their suppression, the advent of democracy, and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. Using archive footage, including the assassination of President Boudiaf in 1992, Hadjadj meticulously re-presents a chronology of events still deeply embedded in every Algerian's memory. An intelligent examination of both the attraction and rejection of Islamic fundamentalism. Algeria 2005 Dir. Belkacem Hadjadj 90 min. In Arabic with English subtitles
