The "Back to My Roots" festival happens in August in Olal, North Ambrym, Vanuatu.
The 3-day festival is a highlight of any cultural experience in Vanuatu, it is an authentic and'real' experience and not just an artificial show made up for tourists, where guests can witness chiefs passing their ranks and the ceremonies are part of the community's life.
By organizing this as a festival open to the public, the organizers (Chiefs Sekor and Norbert) raise some money for the local school... so visitors contribution go to local education.
Visitors can witness traditional dances, demonstrations of magic and other local culture at this lively event. The festival centres on Halhal Fantor village in the Olal region, which boasts a string of events. The first day begins with a traditional opening ceremony (Hipipirrhan), followed by traditional dances, flute-playing, magic, local food, children's games and Sand Drawing displays. The festival finishes with a performance of the famous Rom custom dance on the last day.
20 to 22 august all day and night
