Encounters is the interface between the filmmakers and their public. South African and international directors and producers are invited to present their films and engage in debate with the audience. Audience attendance is on the increase - Encounters has cultivated a growing audience for the documentary genre, with the added pleasure of the opportunity to meet and talk with the filmmakers.

Encounters is increasingly a'trade' festival, an important event for all South African filmmakers, a place exhibit work, network and establish contacts with other filmmakers.

Originally a Cape Town only festival, due to popular demand, Encounters had its first Johannesburg outing in 2001 that proved very successful and which will continue in 2002.
