In contemporary Art, Kastom can take a particular own place. The Vanuatu French Cultural Center hosts an exhibition of Sophie de Garam's new works that questions relationships to and from Kastom practices versus Contemporary Art.

The Kapkap that is very inspiring to her, is a smoothed down circular white clam-shell disc with a finely carved turtle shell work placed on top.
Their patterns are made up of radial arrangement of triangles, zigzags and lozenges aligned in a series of concentric circles
The two contrasting components are fastened together by a length of shell beadwork or cordage and are hung around the neck or in the Solomon Islands, strapped to the forehead.

They are striking not only for their aesthetics appeal but also because they were and still are to an extent, produced on several inter connected islands from the Admiralty Islands to New Irelands and Solomon islands as well as Buka and Bougainville.

When Sophie decides to explore a practice, she manages to get in every possible corner of her research. Here she chose to work with/around the kapkap, transforming its various messages, both visual and spiritual. The interesting process occuring is the loss of the original meaning and a simultaneous aquisition of new stories. The kapkap becomes a mutant, a traveller. She makes it speak through other materials, layered and sophistically worked, keeping it tightly centered and respected, in its form and visual powers. Sophie's kapkap have travelled from kastom to contemporary art, and are still making the link between men and invisible worlds.
